Rainy Day Poem

This everyday preschool poem is a great way to help preschoolers become more familiar with their bodies. Having a fun way to learn about body parts and their functions will help keep children interested in learning. The Rainy Day Poem is a great indoor or outdoor group activity.

On those rainy days when preschoolers are stuck inside, it’s often a challenge to keep them busy. The Rainy Day Poem is the perfect solution to that problem. This poem, similar to the Head and Shoulders Knees and Toes poem we all know and love, helps identify parts of the body and their various functions. The Rainy Day Poem is a fun way to get preschoolers moving indoors when there’s little chance of going out. Try it out in a group, having the preschoolers point to the body parts mentioned and acting out the activities indicated in parentheses. This rainy day poem is sure to have everyone smiling in no time!
Rainy Day Poem
Today it’s raining,
So what should we do?
Lets name the pieces,
On me and on you.
Two eyes that see,
(point to eyes)
Two ears that hear,
(point to ears)
A nose that smells,
(point to nose)
A mouth to cheer!
(when you say cheer, cheer really loud!)
A head to nod,
(nod your head)
And shoulders to shrug,
(shrug your shoulders)
Two legs to run,
(run in place)
Two arms to hug.
(hug your arms around yourself)
It might be gloomy,
(make a frowning face and put your hands on your hips)
It might be grey,
(keep your frowning face and pretend to pout)
But we can have fun,
(make a happy face)
Anyway!
(now cheer)

Up in the Sky

Up in the Sky is a poem to teach preschoolers more about the world above them and the differences between up and down. It is helpful to preschoolers and educators to have different ways to learn and play. With this poem you are given a couple options.

Up in the Sky
I love to see the stars,
(put your open hands above your head and shake them like twinkling stars)
They twinkle in the sky. I
 love to see the birdies,
(Flap your arms on your side, like a bird trying to fly)
Look how high they fly.
I love to see a rainbow,
(Move your arms from one side to the other, like a rainbow over your head)
When the sun peaks through the clouds.
I love to see new snowflakes,
(With your hands above your head, slowly bring them towards the ground)
As they fall gently to the ground.
I love to see the airplanes,
(Put your hands out to your sides, like an airplanes wings, and fly back and forth)
Flying way up high.
I love to see all the things,
That happen in the sky.
